Over one decade ago, I made the decision to jump into an industry that had always intrigued me: journalism.
Way back then, it was programs like SportsCentre and Sportsnet Central, and the lore of covering the game of hockey and live sports that initially had me hooked on the industry.
I started in the industry in 2013 with a goal of one day being that person who delivered the news, specifically, on TV. I got there, but it didn't come easy. After four years of working at the University of Regina's the Carillon, my outlook on the world was forever changed by seeing how news actually works. Back then, social media was relatively new, and still something the world was trying to figure out. Luckily, I got a front row seat to the action, watching the different programs and software's come and go, but also seeing the constants in the industry.
I watched, and figured out the more nuanced portions of the trade, knowing that a job in media didn't necessarily need to be on air, or need your name in a byline.
In 2017, I made a move to Saskatoon to head to school at Western Academy Broadcasting College. After just four months studying the ins and outs of broadcasting and radio, I made my way to my first on-air job in the industry, doing Weekend News anchoring and producing at Yorkton's GX94.
From there, a brief stint in Dauphin, Manitoba led to a full time position in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. It was in North Battleford where I really saw the skills that were needed to succeed in the industry, along with pushing into a reporting role and securing the position of Morning News Anchor.
After covering the 2019 Meridian Canadian Open Grand Slam of Curling event, I made a choice to work towards a move to Saskatoon. A few weeks later, a random tweet after a frigid game officiating hockey in Edam (yes, the story gets wilder, stay with me here) led to a campaign ran across Saskatchewan, dubbed "Saskatchewan's Coldest Barn."
It ran for one month, and started off as a bit of a joke. Little did Saskatchewan know, we take a lot of pride in our cold rinks. Video promotions, cross promotions with various markets and media outlets, it all was created over a simple tweet, leading to thousands of votes cast over the 30-day campaign. To make things even crazier, the eventual winning community contacted me to explain that they had been approached by a level of government to give them grants to warm up the place.
It seems small, but in that exercise, I realized that you can make a difference doing this profession. From that point, I started to move more and more into the world of news, and made it a goal not just to amplify their voices, but also to help create change.
That Coldest Barn event too, created a change I never thought possible in my career. It caught the attention of those at Rawlco radio, and led to a professional change of heading to Saskatoon. After three years (and a pandemic thrown in there) of daily journalism on 650 CKOM as an anchor, reporter and web editor, I made the change to television, realizing goals I had set for myself decades before.
The move to the TV screen included a move to Yorkton, which changed my life for the better in so many ways. The connections I've been able to create in the area throughout nearly two years at CTV Yorkton have not only been long lasting, but gave me the idea for the next step in my professional career, one behind the scenes, with a focus on helping you create a digital space to show off to the world.
